[Forward to a Friend]

a song I can't remember the title to
I grew up with oldies, listening to it with my parents, and there's this one song in particular that I keep thinking about lately that I haven't heard in years, but I can't remember anything about it except the story in the song. It's about a guy who picks up a 16 year old girl (I think in or near a cemetary), and he drives her home and walks her to her door. When he gets back in the car, he realizes that she left her sweater in his car. So he walks back up to the front door, and knocks, and her dad (or maybe it was her mom) answered and he asked who he was, so he told him he just dropped off his daughter and she forgot her sweater, so he's returning it. And her dad replies, "how can you be so cruel? My daughter died years ago?" Thats basically all I can remember of it. If anyone has any info on the title of this song, the singer, or anything, I would greatly appreciate any help. :) Thanks

Your question reminded me of this song...

Cliff Richard - Carrie

Sorry to disturb you
but I was in the neighbourhood
about a friend I've her picture, could you take a look.

Oh I appreciate you're busy
and time's not your own
maybe it would be better if I telephoned.

Carrie doesn't live here anymore
Carrie used to room on the second floor
sorry that she left no forwarding address
that was known to me
Carrie doesen't live here anymore
you could always ask at the corner store
Carrie had a date with her own kind of fate
it's plain to see.

Another missing person
one of many we assume
the young wear their freedom like cheap perfume.

(It's useless information)
Returning my call
(To help the situation)
The've nothing at all
you're just another message on a pay phone.

Carrie doesen't live here anymore
Carrie used to room on the second floor
sorry that she left no forwarding address
that was known to me
Carrie.

Carrie doesn't live here anymore
Carrie used to room on the second floor
sorry Carrie left no forwarding address
it's a misery.

May also check on a track called "Laurie (strange things happen)". Dickey Lee recorded the track (not sure if he's the original artist though.)

Lyrics:

Last night at the dance I met Laurie,
So lovely and warm, an angel of a girl.
Last night I fell in love with Laurie -
Strange things happen in this world.

As I walked her home,
She said it was her birthday.
I pulled her close and said
"Will I see you anymore?"
Then suddenly she asked for my sweater
And said that she was very, very cold.

I kissed her goodnight
At her door and started home,
Then thought about my sweater
And went right back instead.
I knocked at her door and a man appeared.
I told why I'd come, then he said:

"You're wrong, son.
You weren't with my daughter.
How can you be so cruel
To come to me this way?
My Laurie left this world on her birthday -
She died a year ago today."

A strange force drew me to the graveyard.
I stood in the dark,
I saw the shadows wave,
And then I looked and saw my sweater
Lyin' there upon her grave.

Strange things happen in this world

It's called "Laurie strange things happen" by Dickey Lee. This one has haunted me for years and I always wondered about the complete lyrics which I couldn't remember. So I searched google and it came up. If you belong to rapsody, they have another version of it by William Ward. It's a different version, but clearly the song and tune I remember. Here are the lyrics:

Last night at the dance I met Laurie,
So lovely and warm, an angel of a girl.
Last night I fell in love with Laurie -
Strange things happen in this world.

As I walked her home,
She said it was her birthday.
I pulled her close and said
"Will I see you anymore?"
Then suddenly she asked for my sweater
And said that she was very, very cold.

I kissed her goodnight
At her door and started home,
Then thought about my sweater
And went right back instead.
I knocked at her door and a man appeared.
I told why I'd come, then he said:

"You're wrong, son.
You weren't with my daughter.
How can you be so cruel
To come to me this way?
My Laurie left this world on her birthday -
She died a year ago today."

A strange force drew me to the graveyard.
I stood in the dark,
I saw the shadows wave,
And then I looked and saw my sweater
Lyin' there upon her grave.

Strange things happen in this world.

I think you are wanting the song Strange Things Happen by Dicky Lee
Also known as Laurie.
Last night at the dance I met Laurie
So lovely and warm
An angle of a girl
Last night I fell in love with Laurie
Strange things happen in this world

As I walked her home she said it was her birthday
I pulled her close and said
Will I see you anymore
And suddenly she asked for my sweater
And said that she was very very cold
I kissed her goodnight at her door and started home
Then thought about my sweater
And went right back and said
I knocked at her door
And a man appeared
I told him why i'd come
And he said

You're wrong son
You weren't with my daughter
How can you be so cruel
To come to me this way
My daughter left this world on her birthday
She died a year ago today

A strage force drew me to the graveyard
I stood in the cold
I saw the shadows gleam
And then I saw my sweater
Lying there upon her grave
Strange things happen in this world
